Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Tuesday 31.01.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Wind and fresh snow may give unstable conditions in some slopes. Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger. Avoid convex terrain.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 31. January 2023

Mountain weather

Monday 30. January 2023

2-6 mm precipitation. Rain up to 100 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from northeast. -11 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 31. January 2023

2-6 mm precipitation. Precipitation as snow. Breeze from north. -12 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
